• Simple Past Tense

Adalah kalimat yang digunakan untuk menyatakan peristiwa atau kejadian di masa lampau.

• Pattern (rumus) :

A. Verbal (kata kerja)

(+)       S + Verb 2 + O + Keterangan

(-)        S + Did + Not + Verb I + O + Keterangan

(?)        Did + S + Verb I + O + Keterangan

Contoh :

(+)       You bought news paper last week

(-)        You did not buy news paper last week

(?)        Did you buy news paper last week?

Yes, I did         No, I did not

(+)       She drunk a glass of tea in the class room

(-)        She did not drink a glass of tea in the class room

(?)        Did she drink a glass of tea in the class room?

Yes, she did     No, she did not

B. Non Verbal

Dibedakan menjadi 3, yaitu :

a. Adjective (kata sifat)

(+)       S + Tobe + Adjective

(-)        S + Tobe + Not + Adjective

(?)        Tobe + S + Adjective

Contoh :

(+)       My father  was busy

(-)        My father is not busy

(?)        Was My father busy?

Yes, He was     No, He was not

(+)       They were busy

(-)        They were not busy

(?)        Were They busy?

Yes, They were            No, They were not

b. Noun (kata benda yang berwujud profesi)

(+)       S + Tobe + Noun

(-)        S + Tobe + Not + Noun

(?)        Tobe + S + Noun

Contoh :

(+)       Your mother was a teacher

(-)        Your mother was not a teacher

(?)        Was your mother a teacher?

Yes, she was    No, She was not

(+)       My boy friend was a doctor

(-)        My boy friend was not a doctor

c. Adverb (kata keterangan)

Dibedakan menjadi 4 :

1. Adverb of place ( keterangan tempat)

Kata keterangan tempat biasanya di awali dengan Preposition (kata depan) yaitu : In, On, Beside, Behind, At, To, Top, Over, Above, Below, Under, Under, In front of, Back, Opposite, Corner, Middle, Side, dll.

2. Adverb of time ( keterangan waktu)

Kata keterangan waktu yaitu : Second, minute, Hour, Day, Week, Month, Year.

- Adverb of frequency (keterangan frekuensi)

Kata keterangan Frekuensi yaitu : Always, Usually, Sometimes, Seldom, Rarely, Generally, Often, dll.

- Adverb of manner (keterangan cara)

kata sifat yang ditambah akhiran ly, yang artinya “ dengan …”

contoh : fastly → dengan cepat

carefully → dengan hati-hati

(-)        S + Tobe + Not + Adverb

(?)        Tobe + S + Adverb

Contoh :

(+)       They were in the class room

(-)        They were not in the class room

(?)        Were they in the class room?

Note :

• Kata kerja Bantu :

“Did” untuk semua subjek → I, You, They, We, He, She, It

• Tobe Past : Was, Were

Tobe “Was” untuk subjek → I, He, She, It

Tobe “Were” untuk subjek → You, They, We

• Time Signal (tanda waktu) : Yesterday, last …(week, month, year, century), …ago (two days ago, ten minutes ago, three months ago), the day before yesterday, dll.
